We have a potential new customer that would like - if possible - to be able render Microsoft documents (eg. Word documents, Excell Spreadsheets) in the browser window, without having the said Microsoft applications installed on the PC.

This is a security requirement. Many end users are limited in the software they have on their PC's and in this situation, the client in question would like the end users to be able to see the formated document(s), but they do not want to risk any changes being made to the document(s).

As part of this question, a number of non-microsoft browsers do not open the said document(s), instead they offer to download them. Can this download be prevented by the IceBreak server? (using a Security Exit pogram perhaps?)

Thanks
Syd

Hi Syd;

1)On PC wehre the word applicatin is not installed you can still show Word Documents with the free word browser plug-in from microsoft:

http://office.microsoft.com/download...wd97vwr32.aspx

Other vendors have made similar stuff for mac:
http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginword/

2) preventing a download can be done by incapsulate the word doc in a asp pgm:

IceBreak featues double suffix: IceBreak detects the first suffix, and the browser detects the following suffix.

The file name might be:

MyApp.ASP.DOC

The contents type however has to be set so the browser can open the resulting file. Otherwise a dialog box will appear asking you to download the file
